My partner and I are ready to register for gifts and we are seeking the most efficient way to do it. Most registries allow any gift to be returned to the store for cash. Additionally, one can often find 20 per cent coupons for this store (meaning that one can return a gift worth $100 and then buy it back with a coupon for $80). Which gifts should we register for? I am worried that if we register for lower-priced gifts, then people who have a higher willingness to pay will take advantage of the consumer surplus and buy a cheaper gift. Or should we just register for the gifts we want because the opportunity cost spent returning gifts and buying new items will be too high?

I wonder whether they’ll be treating their customers (oops guests) to any lovely wedding favours or treats… Maybe not!

Ivory is the most classic of all wedding themes. When choosing a theme you can be sure that this colour will feature somewhere for the majority of brides, perhaps not with enormous prominence but as an underlying theme on which to base the look and feel of your wedding day.

If you’re using another strong colour to compliment the ivory such as burgundy or gold, its often a good idea to use the bold colour for the floral arrangements, the favours and wedding party outfits, leaving you free to use ivory as a backdrop for the reception.

A really beautiful contemporary look which is becoming more popular is to use only ivory. This can create an extremely dramatic look to proceedings and reveals to your guests that this going to be no ordinary wedding.

How to use Ivory as part of your table decorations

The best place to start is with ivory table linen.  This can be supplied by your wedding venue but it’s best to check with them first as they may supply white as standard. A lot of brides love the idea of chair covers, swathes of beautiful fabric wrapped with a huge organza bow adds a real wow factor to the room. However, on the flip side you need to think long and hard about how vital they are to the day. Once in the room guests will hang jackets over the chairs and once everyone is seated the covers are difficult to see. I do know one bride who agonised over whether to add these as the conference style chairs at the venue were all orange and blue, and after the wedding I couldn’t have told you whether she opted for the covers or not. It’s one of those things that seems really important to you but hardly anyone else will notice.

Ivory table decorations – less is more

Obviously your flowers will form an huge part of your wedding table decorations and you’ll need to opt for 1 arrangement per table. Apart from this I always think less is more and its best to stick to some table confetti or real flower petals with the whole look finished off with some really stunning favours. Quite often once the table is dressed and laid with 3 glasses per person, and the various dishes and napkins you’re getting close to cluttered.

Next liberally shake out a couple of handfuls of petals or confetti whichever you prefer.

It’s really a matter of preference and depends on the kind of look you are going for. I would say the more traditional route is real flower petals. These can be the preserved whole rose petal variety or you may prefer the pretty mix of delphinium colours. Whole rose petals are available in a huge range of colours and they look really effective. You could either opt for ivory or a contrasting colour to sit prettily on ivory table linen. As long as they don’t come into contact with water they will retain their beautiful colours for months. As the colour has a certain shelf life however, this is one item you should wait until the last minute before ordering – although please don’t give me a heart attack and order them with only days to spare!.

Sparkly table confetti looks really glamorous as it catches the light. The kids love to play with it too so you’ll find it gets rearranged as the days goes on. There are some lovely irridenscent varieties on the market which look great if you’re keeping to the ivory theme. Best to check with your venue if you want to use this as with all the table decorations.

Finally wedding favours – my favourite bit – not because we specialise in them but because you can do so much with them. Some of your older guests won’t be aware of these and they are all the more delighted when they realise they are receiving a small gift from you and your new hubby.

Ivory Rose Wedding Favour

My favourite ivory wedding favours on the market are ivory rose chocolate dragee flowers. They really are stunning and the joy is that many of your guests won’t guess they are edible to start with. The rose head is made from a length of ivory satin and then twisting down the stem you’ll find sugar coated chocolates wrapped in tulle and attached to the stem. To get at the sweets you simply tug at the tulle wrapping and remove each one. They are a real talking point and the best way to break the ice is to let the children or one two adults know that the flowers are edible and it results in a huge game of Chinese whispers throughout the reception. The roses retail at £2.99 which is pretty good value as you don’t need to buy boxes or wrappers for them

According to the Daily Mail last week, the latest wedding in the Hinduja family in Bombay had a mere 6,000 guests.  The billionaire family with stakes in finance, telecommunications, film and oil businesses decided to trim down the number of functions from 5 to 2 in order to cut down costs.  Guests were encouraged to bring their blessing for the couple rather than lavish gifts.

Closer to the real world, sales of wedding dresses at Oxfam are widely reported to be on the increase this year.  Sales of wedding gowns at the charity’s stores have soared in the last six months, as many brides think of new ways to cut back on costs.  Gowns that usually sell for £2,000 can be nabbed for as little as £150 and the dresses are donated from fashion shows, designers and former brides. 

Oxfam bridal manager Christine Barter chatted to Marie Claire magazine and reported that ‘sales in the Southampton Store were up 27% since February last year.’ 

So if you’re thinking of trying to cut costs there are lots of inventive ways to do things from designer dress sales to DIY wedding favours.
